Benzodiazepines: Abuse, effects, types, risks and addiction

Benzodiazepine Abuse

The authors assume my “alarm and disapproval” of provisions in Section 175 of the MIPPA and that I would “like to see benzodiazepine prescription coverage denied to those on Medicare.” The authors also assert that I advocate for denying benzodiazepines to people under age 65. The fact is that I wholeheartedly support provisions in Section 175 of the MIPPA. At no point in my letter did I make a case for exclusion of benzodiazepines for those on Medicare or for people under age 65. However, I do make a case for self monitoring within our profession that would preclude a need for any blanket exclusion law, such as Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act MMA in future. In this context it is important to remember that if there were no concerns about the use of benzodiazepines in the vulnerable elderly population, this class of medications would not have been restricted by the MMA in the first place.

Addiction Treatment

It is notable that participants in the present study reported co-use as a method of coming down from stimulant use in pattern 1, and a number of participants in patterns 4–6 reported use of crack cocaine. Stimulant use, and fatal overdoses involving stimulants have increased sharply in recent years in amphetamine addiction treatment the UK 11, 49. Stimulant use in addition to benzodiazepines and opioids may further increase the risk of fatal overdose. For most people in our study these drugs were used in combination with a range of prescribed (e.g. antidepressants–mirtazapine, anti-inflammatory pain medication–naproxen, anticonvulsants–pregabalin) (see Table 3).

We have also been intentionally descriptive in the naming of the patterns in order that they highlight the specificity of which types of drugs are co-used and when during the day. The Recovery Village aims to improve the quality of life for people struggling with a substance use or mental health disorder with fact-based content about the nature of behavioral health conditions, treatment options and their related outcomes. It should not be used in place of the advice of your physician or other qualified healthcare provider. I did cite Wagner et al3 in order to point out reduction in benzodiazepine use as a result of increased overseeing by states.

  • Legally manufactured forms of benzodiazepine are classified as schedule IV drugs in the U.S.
  • Under “Adults overall”, a characteristic row presents the prevalence of as-prescribed or misuse within that stratum (e.g., 5.2% of adults reported misuse).
  • Victoria Ratliff, played by Parker Posey, whose Southern drawl brings a distinctive ring to the word “lorazepam,” can’t seem to get through the day without popping these anti-anxiety pills like candy, sometimes downing them with white wine at dinner.
  • Most people who are prescribed a benzodiazepine use it according to their doctor’s orders.
  • Stringent requirements impeded access for appropriate medical use.53-56 Health care providers and lawmakers must be cautious when implementing laws and strategies to tackle prescription drug abuse to avoid hindering appropriate care.
  • Only a very small percentage of people who take normal doses for short periods will become dependent on benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepine Overdose Signs and Symptoms

  • Tensions between helping patients and minimising benzodiazepine prescribing were managed on an individual basis 67.
  • Whether you are struggling with addiction, mental health or both, our expert team is here to guide you every step of the way.
  • Harms from drugs such as zopiclone and zolpidem are less well characterised.

The benzodiazepine withdrawal high level of use among these late middle-age adults means that potentially inappropriate prescribing of benzodiazepines to older adults may continue as this cohort ages. In this cross-sectional analysis of U.S. adults, the annual prevalence of benzodiazepine use, when including both prescription use and misuse, was 12.6% and exceeded 15% among women and non-Hispanic white patients. By age, the highest rate of overall benzodiazepine use was among adults 50–64. More than 2% overall endorsed misuse, which was highest among the youngest adults (18–25), for whom misuse exceeded as-prescribed use. The most effective treatment for benzodiazepine use disorder is to gradually reduce how much of the drug you use under the supervision of a medical professional. You can do this in a treatment facility or hospital, or at home with the help of your doctor.

Regardless of where you seek treatment, the two categories regarding choosing a benzo rehab center are inpatient or outpatient treatment. If you’re someone in Colorado facing a benzo addiction, you may have some questions such as where benzo treatment centers are located and what happens at a benzo rehab center. As you continue to use benzos, it makes changes to receptors and neural systems in your brain, and it becomes extremely difficult for you to function without the use of the drugs. Addiction to benzos is complex and challenging to treat because of these changes that occur in the brain, which is why addiction to any substance is classified as a chronic disease. Once you introduce your brain to something that triggers such a big release of dopamine, it activates your reward centers, and your brain creates a feedback loop to continue seeking the drug that stimulated that response.
